Where Does Self-Discipline Start?

For military veterans, and anyone else struggling to find a place in life, developing self-discipline in an enigmatic, yet crucial, process. It also depends on the wants and needs of the individual attempting to harness this process. There is not a one-size-fits-all way to master discipline, and I don’t even think mastery is the point. The point is to never quit on yourself, throughout the difficult journey of learning yourself and your chosen field.

With that said, where do you start? It’s easier than you think:

  1. Realize that your life is all your fault.

  2. Find something to do with your hands.

  3. Dedicate your life to that one thing.

Now, once you’ve found that one thing, pursuing it is now your purpose. For me it’s woodworking, for others it could be literally anything. The point is now there is a clear path, and something to build a life around in order to begin to create habits that revolve around and feel your purpose.

Unlike a lot of modern wisdom on discipline, it isn’t ALL about becoming the toughest operator/athlete out there, but it is about tailoring your life for your purpose. So, if you need to workout, exercise in ways that promote growth and longevity. The same thing applies to eating, writing, leisure time, and how you conduct your business - whatever it happens to be.

Then, when life get’s hard, and there is no one to turn to, you will have your craft to fall back on to help keep your physical and emotional self, on the path.

“You must understand that there is more than one path to the top of the mountain.”

- Miyamoto Musashi
